A Fresh Approach to New Year Resolutions: Cultivating Emotions over Actions

I've always been captivated by the promise that the beginning of a new year holds. It's a canvas of endless possibilities, a chance to set intentions and make resolutions that could redefine our lives. While statistics tell us that a significant percentage of resolutions don't survive the first two weeks, the allure of a fresh start remains irresistible. This year, however, I've decided to take a different route. Instead of succumbing to the allure of grand goals like getting super fit or writing the next bestselling book, I've chosen to focus on something more profound—the way I want to feel.

This year is about prioritizing feelings over actions. I've identified three core emotions that I want to cultivate throughout the year: health, connection, and joy. These emotions transcend specific tasks and illuminate the path to a more fulfilling life.

For me, feeling healthy isn't just about ticking off a list of fitness goals. It's about finding joy in being organized, as it alleviates stress and contributes to my overall well-being. It’s about prioritizing my yoga and exercise classes over anything else, just because that’s going to make me feel great. So, my resolution isn't merely to be organized or exercising; it's about embracing the joy that comes with it.

Connection is another cornerstone of my emotional landscape. To feel more connected to my loved ones, I've realized that I need to be intentional about creating time. For my partner, I've identified quality time as the key. Understanding that this is my love language, I've made it a priority to plan activities that we can enjoy together. It's not about the quantity of time but the quality of our shared experiences and the intentionality of it.

When it comes to my family, who are scattered across different geographies, staying connected requires effort. While I can't physically be with them all the time, scheduling regular calls and reaching out to my mom daily helps bridge the distance. With friends in California and Europe, it's about making time for meaningful interactions and prioritizing what truly matters.

This shift in perspective has allowed me to approach resolutions with a new sense of purpose. It's not about rigidly adhering to a checklist but about embracing actions that evoke the emotions I seek. As the year unfolds, I am excited about the prospect of aligning my daily choices with my desired feelings—health, connection, and joy.

In essence, this year's resolutions aren't about achieving specific milestones; they're about creating a life that resonates with the emotions I hold dear. By prioritizing how I want to feel, I believe I'll be paving the way for a more meaningful and fulfilling journey in the coming months. After all, the true essence of a resolution lies not in its completion but in the transformation it brings about in our lives.

Cheers to a year of emotions, connections, and joy!
